Governor Roy Cooper orders flags to fly at half-staff for Patriot Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 9, 2023) - Governor Roy Cooper has ordered all United States and North Carolina flags at state facilities to fly at half-staff on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2023, in observance of Patriot Day and the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Why is Patriot Day recognized?

Patriot Day is a national day of remembrance and mourning for the victims of the September 11th attacks. It is also a day to honor the first responders and military members who risked their lives to save others. Patriot Day was established by Congress in 2002 and is observed on September 11th of each year.

How can I observe Patriot Day?

There are many ways to observe Patriot Day, including:

  • Attending a memorial service or ceremony
  • Volunteering your time to a charity or organization that supports victims of terrorism
  • Donating blood
  • Flying the American flag at half-staff
  • Observing a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., the times when the first and second planes struck the World Trade Center
